New ASTM standards: A Work In Progress

Magic Jump is dedicated to delivering safe high-quality inflatables. All of our inflatables adhere to safety measures set forth by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and comply with standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International. As for the state laws in the inflatables industry, the majority of our inflatables conform to the standards of New Jersey, which has pioneered strict, mandatory production and safety guidelines for manufacturers of inflatable games.

There are no mandatory national safety standards for U.S. amusement rides, but the amusement ride industry has developed an extensive suite of consensus safety standards through the ASTM International Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices, which is responsible for standards related to amusement rides and devices including inflatables. In an effort to toughen safety standards and reduce injury rates, a group of manufacturers, operators and regulators in the amusement industry are updating industry guidelines to be more specific and to reinforce the importance of proper setup, supervision and training. The guidelines will be finalized by ASTM International.

ASTM International Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices is revising an important standard on inflatable amusement rides. The responsible subcommittee, F24.61 on Adventure Attractions, invites all interested parties to contribute to the revision of standard F2374, Practice for Design, Manufacture, Operation and Maintenance of Inflatable Amusement Rides. Within the subcommittee, three task groups have been formed to develop requirements and test methods for key areas: design and manufacturing group; operations and patron education; and testing and inflatable impact requirements.

Revisions include:

  • Drafting manufacturing requirements to mitigate fall hazards;
  • Adding a section on anchoring, including diagrams showing correct positioning and depth of anchor stakes;
  • Creating a provision for professional certification of wind load calculations; and
  • Expanding sections on procedures and rules for installation of air inflatables, supervision by trained attendants and safe use by patrons.

At Magic Jump, we’ll always make sure that your customers bounce around on the best — and safest — inflatable equipment available. We love inflatables™
